Like all other operations, liposuction entails a number of side effects. There are many people who think of liposuction as an extremely simple cosmetic process like putting makeup on. They often think there isn’t any side effect or risk associated with liposuction.
In reality, liposuction is a full surgery that involves the placing of incisions on the body and surgical removal of the fat tissue. As such, there are a number of side effects associated with the procedure. In this video, I will discuss the normal side effects of liposuction.
During the first 24-48 hours after the liposuction, you may experience some degree of pain and discomfort in your body. This is absolutely normal. Many patients experience mild pain and discomfort; however, the exact intensity of the pain depends on your pain tolerance level. I have even seen patients who haven’t experienced any pain at all. To provide you relief from the pain, your doctor may recommend some pain relief medications.
The second common and temporary side effect of liposuction is swelling. The surgery involves incisions, which means your skin, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels may be injured during the procedure. After the procedure, your body’s natural healing process will come into action. The swelling is an indication that your body is working to heal the incisions and injured tissue. The swelling will gradually disappear over the next few weeks.
Next, your body will be bruised after liposuction. The areas operated upon may become discolored and inflamed. The bruising is a common and temporary condition. Over the next few weeks, you will see the bruises gradually disappear.
There is also a probability that your skin will have a temporary change in sensation. This occurs when the nerves are injured during the surgery. As the nerves heal, you will regain your natural skin sensation. This may take a few weeks.
Another common and unavoidable side effect of liposuction is scarring. The tiny incisions placed on your body during the procedure will develop into scars. While the scars will fade and become less visible after a few months, they will stay with you for a lifetime. You should bear in mind that any procedure that involves incisions leaves scars, and liposuction is no exception. Luckily, the liposuction scars will be tiny and almost invisible.
Another common side effect that many patients experience after liposuction is baggy or wrinkled skin. The condition will gradually subside as the skin retracts after a few weeks or months unless you have excess skin prior to surgery.

Thousands of people choose tummy tuck surgery to achieve a flatter, firmer stomach. Dr. Jerome Edelstein explains what you can do to get the best results from such a procedure. Since any tummy tuck is considered major surgery and involves a significant financial investment, Dr. Edelstein offers several tips for the best results.

1) Take your time to find a qualified cosmetic surgeon you trust who is highly experienced with this type of surgery. A caring attitude is also important since the doctor will be involved in your post-operative care as well as the actual surgery.

2) Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle goes a long way to ensure the best results after abdominoplasty. Ideally, you should be at your target weight before having surgery so there is no extra loose skin or fat due to additional weight loss.

3) Staying hydrated is important for combating the risks involved with surgery, and also to help minimize nausea.

4) A compression garment should be worn, beginning in the recovery room. This helps protect the muscles as well as the incision and speeds healing. A second garment is recommended so one can always be worn while one is laundered.

5) Since a tummy tuck is major surgery, plenty of rest is required with restricted activity for at least three weeks (no working out). It is important, though, to get up and move around regularly to promote blood flow and prevent clots.

6) Showing off your new look may be important but scars need to be protected from exposure to the sun for at least a year to avoid hyper-pigmentation that will make them stand out.
