TUMMY TUCK RECOVERY: 7 Must Do’s
What should you do for the best possible recovery after a tummy tuck? The must-do’s start with the days right after surgery and include advice from your surgeon to walk with a slight bend at the waist for the first few days and curl up into a fetal tuck when sleeping. This will take pressure off your stitches.
As you heal, protect the scar from direct sunlight, which can worsen its appearance. Cover it with SPF 30 or higher when spending time in the sun. Be diligent about emptying drainage tubes (if inserted in your procedure) so that you prevent fluid buildup and infection. Record the output so that your surgeon can tell when it’s time to remove the drains. To further reduce infection risk, avoid soaking in the bathtub for about 2 weeks (showers are allowed) and consider pools off-limits for at least 4 weeks.
Wear the compression garment almost 24/7 for 3 weeks to keep swelling down and to support your tummy. Refrain from taking aspirin and other NSAIDs (Advil, Aleve, and etcetera) for 2 weeks; these can prolong bleeding. Avoid alcohol during that time as well as it can interact with pain medication and impede healing. Limit yourself to minimal physical activity for about 6 weeks to avoid placing strain on the incision. Light exercise such as walking is okay.
